Nigerian singer and Mavin signee Crayon is talking about his darkest days in the music industry following his release of seven songs that didn’t make any waves. Working in any industry, we know how much pressure there is to ‘perform’ and ‘deliver’ in your job.
Now imagine when that job’s success or failure is being viewed on a worldwide level, and you’re in one of the most successful and popular labels in the whole continent. It cannot be easy and it certainly wasn’t for singer Crayon. Here’s what he had to say about this very dark time.
Speaking about how it was releasing seven songs and having no one blow, Crayon said:
CRAYON: I actually blew in 2022. In 2019, I came out and “So Fine” did its thing. 2020 was one of my darkest years in the game. I dropped like seven songs and no one blew. Seven and no one picked. I remember when I dropped ‘Kpano,’ everybody was tweeting about it: Wizkid, Mayorkun, everybody was talking about the song. It was about to take off, then COVID-19 hit and everything shut down. And ‘Kpano’ was a club banger.
I dropped the video, it didn’t do nothing. I was dropping songs like every two weeks but still, nothing. But I want to say a big shout out to Jazzy, Tega, Rema, Baby Fresh. They got me out of the situation.
I wouldn’t say I was depressed. It was more of me looking into the mirror and doubting myself and just checking myself like “is it not me again? Is it not Crayon?” Because for me growing up, I have always been a star boy. I have never begged for attention. In my school, I get girls. In my hood, football or anything that has to do with entertainment, I dey forefront. So when it wasn’t happening at the time, it was just like what? Am I cursed? I was checking myself too much. But big shoutout to everybody that was around at the time.
