Veteran Yoruba actor Yomi King, better known by his stage name Opebe, has revealed how he worked with the late comedy legend Babatunde Omidina, better known by his stage name Baba Suwe, in a heartfelt and very personal revelation.
As he reflected on the early years of his acting career and the lessons he learned along the way, Opebe revealed that Baba Suwe frequently treated him with a combination of strict discipline and tough love while they were working together on different film sets.
During an emotional interview published on the official YouTube channel Oyinmomo TV, Yomi King painted a vivid picture of life behind the scenes with Baba Suwe, who until his passing in 2021 was considered one of the pillars of Yoruba comic acting. The veteran actor revealed that Baba Suwe was more than just a colleague — he was a boss, a mentor, and a man with high expectations when it came to delivering top-quality performances on screen.
Opebe did not shy away from detailing the more intense side of Baba Suwe’s approach to acting. He explained that Baba Suwe often demanded excellence from those he worked with, and in moments of perceived failure, he didn’t hesitate to express his displeasure — sometimes physically.
Recalling his experience, Yomi King stated, “I was Baba Suwe’s partner, and I always do what will make him slap me most of the time. Baba Suwe is a fast comedian.
Whenever he is saying something on a movie set, he wants me to say it with him without making mistakes. Baba Suwe used to give me real slaps on my face on movie sets, and I must not return the slaps.”
