In just a few days, on Sunday, July 28, Nigeria’s biggest reality TV show, Big Brother Naija (BBNaija), will kick off its ninth season with unprecedented twists and turns.

For 71 days, paired housemates will entertain Nigerians and the rest of Africa through their TV screens.

Here are five twists and turns to expect in BBNaija Season 9:

1. Season 9’s Theme Is Centred Around Duos:

At a recent BBNaija media briefing, it was revealed that the selection criteria for contestants this season was based on the concept of “better as pairs.”

“This year, Biggie requested auditions in pairs, a first for the show. We asked people to come with their friends, besties, family members, spouses, or partners to enter the show together as a pair. That was the selection criteria,” explained Dr. Busola Tejumola, the Executive Head of Content & Channels for West Africa, MultiChoice.

2. The Grand Prize is worth N100m:

Although the theme for the 2024 season has not been announced yet, Dr. Tejumola revealed that the grand prize for this year is worth N100 million, which includes both a cash reward and an SUV. While several sponsors are already supporting the 9th season, it remains unclear whether additional sponsored prizes will be introduced, following recent controversies from a previous season.

3. Head of House (HoH) Challenge will see a Major Twist:

This season, the Head of House challenge will feature a major twist with new primetime activities. Dr. Tejumola shared that, “Right after the launch show on Sunday, a new activity will kick off. This season has high stakes and will move quickly, starting right from Sunday night.”

“Immediately after we meet the housemates, the real action begins with the Custodian Challenge at 9 pm on Sunday. The newly renamed HoH Ballot will be used to select the first Head of House, with the process taking place at 10 am on Monday, July 29, 2024. This will be followed by the Custodian Lock-In, the Immunity Challenge, and nominations.”

These new twists and turns are designed to elevate the show’s format, promising fresh dynamics and unforgettable entertainment.

4. Fave Lock-In is Making a Comeback:

Contestants have the chance to win, and fans can also get involved through the Fave Lock-In. With the Fave Lock-In, viewers can predict which pairs they believe will win the Immunity Challenge, and some lucky fans will be rewarded with N1 million each week.

5. Guinness is the 9th Season’s Gold Sponsor:

Guinness is returning as a sponsor of the Big Brother Naija reality TV show, now as a gold sponsor. However, there are several other brands on the extensive sponsorship list.

The season premiere is set for Sunday, July 28, 2024, across all Africa Magic channels. Afterward, viewers can catch all the drama and excitement on DStv Channel 198 and GOtv Channel 49. Fans can also join the conversation on social media using the hashtag #BBNaijaS9.
