Nigerian footballer Victor Boniface has revealed that he is yet to recover following the recent ordeal experienced by the Super Eagles during their trip to Libya.
Nigeria’s senior men’s national team players and officials were held hostage by Libyan authorities at Al Abraq Airport from Sunday to Monday after arriving for Tuesday’s 2025 AFCON qualifying group D against the Mediterranean Knights.
The Super Eagles players were stranded for more than 20 hours without food or water and had no communication whatsoever.
The team had flown into Libya on Sunday afternoon but was diverted to Al Abraq Airport, located over 200 km and a three-and-a-half-hour drive from their intended camp, instead of landing at their original destination, Benghazi Airport.
Photos and videos took over the internet space and some players were captured sleeping on the iron chairs at the terminal while others slept in sitting postures.
Some tired and fatigued Super Eagles players like Victor Boniface, Stanley Nwabali, Moses Simon, Troost-Ekong, Leon Balogun, Victor Osimhen and lots more took to social media accounts to decry the unpalatable situation.
After Federal Government, NFF, and Sports Minister’s intervention, Super Eagles players made a return to Nigeria without playing the scheduled match.
Victor Boniface, who is also a key player at Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen, however stated that the airport ordeal in Libya still rang clearly in his head. He also shared a short video of a boy with tears rolling down on his face.
He wrote, “My body still dey shake.”
