Two teenage sisters in Pakistan were arrested for allegedly killing their father by setting him on fire as revenge for rape, police reported on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on January 1 in the Punjabi city of Gujranwala. The father was hospitalized but succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.

According to Rizwan Tariq, a senior police official, the sisters confessed they had agreed to find a “permanent solution”. Using petrol siphoned from a motorcycle, they set their father on fire while he slept, Tariq added.

The two step-sisters revealed that their father had been raping the elder sister for a year and had twice attempted to assault the younger one.

The girls’ mothers—both married to the man—were aware of the abuse but were unaware of the revenge plot.

AFP has withheld the man’s name to protect the identities of the sisters, one of whom is from a previous marriage.

One of the wives has also been arrested while the second is being questioned.

“We expect to present them before the court in a few days, as soon as we finish the investigation,” Tariq added.
