Despite leaving without an award, Nigerian music star Ahmed Ololade, popularly known as Asake, made a lasting impression at the 2025 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles last night.

The Afrobeats sensation, previously nominated in 2023, faced another setback in the Best African Music Performance category.

His hit song MMS featuring Wizkid competed against tough contenders, including Chris Brown’s Sensational featuring Davido & Lojay, Yemi Alade’s Tomorrow, Burna Boy’s Higher, and the eventual winner, Tems, with Love Me JeJe.

Though the awards eluded him, Asake’s star power was undeniable. He turned the red carpet into his personal runway, debuting a bold new aesthetic that set social media abuzz.

Ditching his signature dreadlocks, he unveiled a sharp military-inspired look, complete with a fresh haircut and striking tattoos—including one on his face that had already sparked online chatter in the weeks leading up to the event.

Speaking with Billboard on the red carpet, Asake addressed his striking transformation, explaining that he simply felt the need to reinvent himself.

While the Grammy remained out of reach, he radiated gratitude, embracing the honor of sharing the stage with fellow African music icons.
